Daddy got new server coming!!

Well it has been inevitable but it is now time for me to build a new server for home. My current server is about 3 years old and it has seen better days. Currently I run Ubuntu 8.10 with a 80 gig OS drive. I had 4 x 300G sata II drives and 5 x 250G IDE drives in it. My original plan was to take the 4 x 300 gig drives out and replace them with 4 x 1tb drives. So I purchased a 1TB external drive and copied all the shit off the 3x300s which were in a raid 5. I yanked them out and continued on down the road with the current situation. I then thought well shit.. I can live with this situation for now and just wait until the prices come way down on the drives. So Bestbuy was having a deal on the 1TB externals and I thought well I am out of space so let me get another one. So I shutdown the server to move plugs around since they have those goofy plugs. Well when I bring up my server it won't boot properly and it sounds like someone threw a bucket of pennies into one of the drives. Well it was bringing the other ata drive on the channel down also. So I found the busted drive by turning it back on and sticking my ear near the drives.

When I pulled it out of there it sounded like the arm was sitting on the platter.. When you shake the drive ti sounds like scratching a record on your favorite 80s rap album. So the joy of raid 5 is you can recover from a drive failure which I did. I then copied the data off the degraded array to the new drive I bought. I then blew the array away and created an array with only 4 drives this time.

So what am I going to do? Well I ordered a quad core proc for my gaming rig and will take the dual core in my gaming rig and pop it in the new gigabyte mobo I bought. The mobo has 8 SATA II slots on the mobo. I will use 2 of those 300s in a mirror for the OS. I then bought 6x1tb western digital green drives which I will run in raid 5. After all is said and done I will have ~ 4.75 TB of usable space. I am also dropping 4 gigs of ram into that bad boy.. It's rediculous how cheap ram is these days. So that should give me some breathing room for now. Having kids means there goes all the disk space when you are talking home video.

Processor

OK, I'm building my own rig and I'm having trouble choosing a processor. I know for sure I'm going with Intel.
I've been trying to find big differences between the normal ones and the Intel Core 2 "Extreme" ones. I'm kind of on a budget and extreme is higher up. If I get the Extreme edition I'll get the QX6700, but if not I'm getting the Q9300. I don't plan on OC'ing it. For the money, which is really the better CPU?
PS. I'm using the rig for gaming, lots of it, Crysis, All the new games and maybe some MMO's.
And the mobo im getting.... XFX 790i Ultra.

Looking for the Geekempire symbol

So I'm working on a new pc build. I have an extra aluminum case and all the stuff for my watercooling rig. The problem is that these is no way I'm gonna go through all the trouble of watercooling and overclocking and then benchmarking out the wazoo if the damn rig looks like shit.

So i was thinking about doing one of the following.

1)Straight milling out the Geekempire symbol and then the the GEEKEMPIRE in its font. Just huge on the side or top of my case.

2) Making a plexiglass window on my rig with the GE logo frosted into it with a blacklight behind it or both.

Problems. In order for me to do this I need a jpeg or other photo file of the symbol in straight black and white. And then of course some ras to vector software.
Or for the second idea i need the photo file so i can have a sticker made so i can frost the window.

I'm actually thinking of milling GEEKEMPIRE into the top of the case but i would need the geekempire font then.

What do you guys think and can someone help me out with the font or the jpegs?

Duel channel memory

I am a total hardware noob and need help figuring out if something is wrong or if i just don't know what i'm doing.

My mother board says it can handle 800mhz duel channel ramzors. When i originally started building i skimped on ram and got a "kit" composed of 2 512 sticks, for a total 1gig. I recently picked up more ramz, got the same brand same timing, 2 gig "kit" 1 gig each. So i have 2 512 sticks in one set of slots and 2 1gig sticks in the other slots.

With only 1 kit, doesn't matter which, the comp boots fine, go into bios and says its at 800mhz. Pop in the other kit, comp doesn't boot. Reset CMOS and it boots, bios says its at 533mhz duel channel. If i leave it at auto it will not reboot. I must manualy set the speed at 533mhz or it wont boot with both kits.

I've futz with the voltages a tiny bit. The defaults are too low for the chip and memory.

Am i misreading the 533 value? Is that really considered 1066 since it's duel channel?

Which video card to buy

Posting separate topic for video card vs. sound card
I'm leaning more and more towards getting another year out of my current system. To do so, I want to upgrade the video card and sound card. See other post for sound card.

I can upgrade the following I think and get at least another year out of my computer:
Video card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814143046
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814150210

I didn't see a better 7600GT as someone else mentioned in another post for $100. If you have a another 8X AGP video card that will be an upgrade to my ATI RADEON 9600 Series AGP 128 MB video card, please post it.

I am willing to spend up to $350 upgrading on this computer vs. $1000-$1500 on a new DIY pc.

Current specs are below:

MOTHERBOARD:
MLB System Manufacturer: ABIT
System Model: KT880-8237
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: AMD Athlon™ XP 3000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.1GHz
Memory: 1022MB RAM
Page File: 382MB used, 3542MB available

VIDEO CARD:
Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Card name: RADEON 9600 SERIES
Chip type: ATI RADEON 9600 Series AGP (0x4151)
Display Memory: 128.0 MB
Current Mode: 1024 x 768 (32 bit) (75Hz)

SOUND:
Sound Description: Realtek AC97 Audio
Model: TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B
Model: SONY DVD-ROM DDU1622
Name: Intel® PRO/100+ PCI Adapter

Which sound card to buy

Need help on deciding on a new sound card. Don't want to spend $180 on a new X-FI sound card, but I need to get away from my on-board sound.
I want to get a laptop so I can game on the go, I like both of these sites and have I have found one for relatively the same price on each. What I want to know is which of these sites do you geeks think is better? Who makes the better machine, and what are the pros and cons of each. The ones that I looked at were about $3k. Is there another option to buying a good laptop? Cheaper is always better, since I haven't won the lotto yet. And, I don't want a dell...

And for anyone that doesn't know who I am, I'm not a geek just a gamer. I'm a newb when it comes to PCs, just ask Army Chimp haha

The Death of AMD

I dunno if anyone is paying attention to the world of computer hardware these days or if everyone else just got tired of the upgrade grind because these days it seem the entire computer industry expects you to buy two of everything because they couldn't figure out how to make one faster.

But every couple of weeks i head over to overclockers.com and check out the forums. You know? To see whats hot in the streets. I check out other sites too but it has been a long time favorite of mine because of the high level of knowledge to be found against the low level of fanboy flaming. In the computer hardware world these days the fight is always, ATI vs. Nvidia or AMD vs. Intel...

Well today I'm talking processors. Apparently half of the known computer hardware world believes the death of AMD is soon to come because Intel is releasing a new processor known as the Core 2 Duo. To keep it simple AMD has nothing on the 65nm market that can compete with this and it seems like the entire industry is calling this the death of AMD.

This crap annoys me to no end.

A)Why would anyone be happy to see AMD go down the tubes?

B)Who cares who made it as long as you have the best product for the dollar

C)Who do you know who absolutely has to have the best of the best literally all the time)

I like AMD. I always have. I nejoy the act of buying a cheap processor and overclocking the hell out of it. I love the fact that usually when I'm done it is faster than the expensive stuff. Well the reason why i stopped doing it is because the overclocking world became less about value and more about paying through the nose to be the first guy on the block to OC to 4.5 GHZ. AMD is priced too high right now and they are getting a nice cross check from Intel on pricing. As far as i see it everyone wins. Its competition. you know that whole thing capitalism runs off of?

The only guys i know who can afford to have the best of the best all the time are people who got that money by not buying the best of the best all the time.

Anyway the point of this thread is whether you are an Intel guy or an AMD guy don't go counting AMD for dead yet. I'm not silly enough to believe they have a trick up their sleeve but i think in a couple of months processor prices are gonna hit rock bottom and once again AMD's market share will rise. In order for one to be on top their has to be one on the bottom.

Also, I'm sick tired of this crap where you have to have two memory sticks, and two video cards, and two dual core processors, and two --> 8 harddrives to have the fast computer. It's just gay and ridiculous to me.

well thats my rant for the day

Alright, my former PC died a horriable death (Some one spilt soda In it). So im ressurcting it to a better life. So far i have used an Asus P4P800SE motherboard, pentium 4 3.0GHZ prescott, 2GB of Kingston PC 3200 ram, and a western dig. 120GB 7200 rpm HDD. I have an ATI radeon 9800pro 128MB and also a GeForce FX5500 256MB. Now the FX5500 has more memory, but a lower core clock of 270MHz vs the radeon at 380 MHz. The memory clock for the FX550 is also lower at 400MHz, vs the Radeon at 650MHz. Im wondering which would run Counter Strike Source, and WoW better than the other. Now i would test both cards out the same, but the proscessor and ram are still coming in the mail. (newegg) ... so give me your input b4 they get here!
