My PC was like vroom...

My PC has been struggling over the last year or so with sluggishness. It's been painfully slow, taking upwards of 10 minutes to boot sometimes. However, like a diesel truck, once it gets going, it's going. I was pretty much stuck with reformatting, but I lost my 32-bit XP Pro disc. I did however have an XP Pro 64-bit disc, but my wireless card isn't 64-bit compatible. So at a loss of what the hell to do with my computer, I took to doing the smartest thing there was:

mucking around in MSConfig.

This was obviously the best course of action I could have taken. I deleted a set of entries from my win.ini. I tweaked my boot.ini and reset the kernel file so I could install SP3(StyleXP changes the kernel to the point where SP3 wouldn't install, claiming my XP install was corrupt). CCleaner was used to clean up the registry, too. I also messed around in "Services", turning off and removing startup launching for probably two dozen programs, from iPod Service to ATI Smart. The result? My computer is blazing fast again, giving me near the full glory of an early dual core CPU and 6GB of RAM that 32-bit XP only uses 4GB of.

However, I think it can be faster. Aside from what I've done, are there any other tips and tricks to help speed up a PC? I'm not going to streamline the shell or anything, especially after I just spent money to buy WindowsBlind, but any other technical things I can tweak to increase my speed would be great.

I figure after we get some tips in here, we could combine them to start a thread about system tweaking.

Saturday night around midnight, computer locked up while being idle. Restarted computer. Motherboard made no audible beeps(supposed to make just one short one) and appeared not to even post. RMAing the motherboard back to newegg as we speak. However, I have two other mobos around that are the appropriate configuration, just older, for my computer. I tried hooking them up, they seem to post, but nothing happens on screen. The HDDs don't spin up or anything. It just beeps once and the fans turn on. I've tried unhooking everything but the essentials(video card, processor, RAM minimums) with no luck. Anyone have any idea what to try next?

Btw, the RAM is fairly new and the video card and PSU are brand spankin' new.

EDIT: Have tried with different sticks of RAM, a different video card, and a different PSU so far.

I had computer sitting around for a little while, hasnt been used for about 8-12 months. Its still connected to power outlet(protected by a power strip with nothing thats been fried. I.E. my main computer and components) but power source is switched off and no monitor hooked up. I went to get some old media and data from it today and I try to power up and....dead. I checked the connections, everything looks normal. No burn marks on top side of Mobo or that I noticed.

I know this may sound like a stupid question. Is it possible for computers to die from just sitting around a little bit and not being used at all? anyone hear of anything like this before? Maybe some BS static electricity crap? All I can think of...

Gonna take out Mobo tomorrow to look for any sights of little burn marks where it may have fried some how. Im kinda lost on what it could be.

So I've been having tremendous problems playing games lately...I'll get computer-turns-off-and-reboots crashes while playing L4D, DOW2, and FEAR 2. Games like TF2 and BF2142 run fine. So I've been troubleshooting this for a while now. Apparently, there is some major malfunction between the SoundBlaster drivers and the nVidia ones. However, I've never had the problem before. So I assume that the latest nVidia drivers are shit. Updated them and same problem. The only issue I can come across is the fan speed...but I fixed that with RivaTuner and it's still crashing.

So I've been going through my computer and physical properties that might be causing it. I just yanked out two fans from my case. I took out old optical drives that were not hooked up. I basically took out everything I could to improve air circulation. Heating appears not to be the issue.

I'm trying to figure it out right now. My top candidates are:

-Underpowered PSU(newegg recommends 670W and I only have a 550W)
-Overheating and need new fans or a new case
-Some unknown software conflict
-Dust(pretty dusty in there for a gaming rig...and it never wants to get clean)
-RAM shit the bed again

Anyone have some input to help me?

If I open a terminal shell on the mac and run smbclient with the //server/folder service parameter, it works and I can cd into the subfolders and view the directory list.

Why is the GUI finder/whatever its called not showing me the contents? Also, the mac does let me see the contents of 2 other folders I've shared on that same windows computer.
